No-Pull Harness vs Regular Harness: Which Is Right for Your Dog?

by Manikandan Rajavel on Mar 25, 2026
No-Pull Harness vs Regular Harness: Which Is Right for Your Dog?

Quick answer: A no-pull harness clips at the chest and redirects a pulling dog sideways, making walks calmer without hurting them. A regular back-clip harness is easier to put on but lets pullers lean into their stride. For any dog that pulls on Indian streets, a no-pull harness is the better choice. Shop No-Pull Harness →

No-Pull Harness vs Regular Harness: Which Is Right for Your Dog?

If your dog pulls on walks, you have options — but they're not all equal. Here's an honest breakdown of every harness type, which dogs they suit, and how to choose the right one for Indian street conditions.

By the Clawmego Team  ·  Updated March 2026  ·  8 min read

Walking a dog in an Indian city is its own sport. Busy roads, autorickshaws, street dogs, vendors, motorcycles — there's a new distraction every ten metres. For a dog that pulls, this turns what should be a pleasant evening walk into an arm-wrenching workout.

The solution most Indian pet parents eventually reach for is a harness. But walk into any pet store or browse any online shop and you're immediately faced with a confusing array: front-clip, back-clip, no-pull, step-in, H-style, vest. Which one actually works for your dog? This guide cuts through all of it.

First: why not just use a collar?

Many Indian pet parents start their dog's walking journey with just a collar and leash. It works — until the dog starts pulling. When a dog pulls against a collar, the pressure goes directly onto the trachea (windpipe) and neck vertebrae. For a dog pulling hard on every walk, this creates cumulative strain that over months and years can lead to tracheal damage, thyroid problems, and neck pain.

This risk is particularly high for brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus whose airways are already compressed. For these breeds, a harness isn't optional — it's essential.

📋  Collar vs harness — when to use each

Use a collar for: wearing ID tags, at home, situations where your dog walks calmly. Use a harness for: all walks, any dog that pulls, puppies learning to walk on a lead, brachycephalic breeds, dogs with neck or tracheal issues.

Regular harness (back-clip) — what it is and who it's for

A regular harness has the leash attachment ring on the back, between the dog's shoulder blades. This is the most common harness type and the easiest for dogs to adjust to. It distributes pressure across the chest and shoulders rather than the neck — which makes it far safer than a collar.

Best suited for:

·       Dogs that walk calmly and don't pull

·       Puppies being introduced to harness wearing for the first time

·       Small dogs (Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Dachshunds) where pulling isn't a major issue

·       Brachycephalic breeds who need neck pressure relief but don't pull hard

The limitation: if your dog pulls, a back-clip harness actually makes it easier for them to pull harder. The attachment point is behind their centre of gravity, so they can put their full body weight into pulling forward — like a sled dog. Great for sledding, not great for urban walks in Bengaluru.

No-pull harness (front-clip) — how it works and why it's different

A no-pull harness has the leash attachment ring on the front of the chest, at the sternum. This single change in attachment point completely transforms the walking dynamic:

When a dog pulls forward, the front clip redirects them sideways — turning them back towards you rather than allowing them to continue pulling ahead. It doesn't hurt them. It doesn't frighten them. It simply makes pulling mechanically ineffective. Within a few walks, most dogs naturally reduce their pulling because they've learned it doesn't work.

🐾  Why front-clip works better than back-clip for pullers

Think of it this way: when you pull a rope attached to the back of something, it moves away from you. When the rope is attached to the front, it turns. A front-clip harness uses physics to discourage pulling — no punishment, no discomfort, just redirection.

Best suited for:

·       Any dog that pulls on walks — regardless of size or breed

·       Dogs being trained to walk calmly — the harness reinforces the training

·       Strong breeds (Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Indie mixes) who can overpower their owners

·       Indian urban walking conditions — busy streets with lots of pulling triggers

·       Pet parents with wrist, shoulder, or back issues who can't absorb constant pulling

Dual-clip harness — the best of both

The best harnesses offer both front and back attachment rings. This gives you flexibility: use the back clip for calm walking or recall training, and the front clip for busy street walks or training sessions. The Clawmego No-Pull Premium Harness has both.

How to choose the right size — Indian breeds guide

Fit is the most important factor in harness safety. A harness that's too loose allows a dog to "slip out" — a terrifying situation on a busy Indian road. Too tight and it chafes and restricts movement. Use this as a guide:

·       Step 1: Measure your dog's chest girth (widest point just behind the front legs) and neck girth

·       Step 2: Add 2–3cm of breathing room to both measurements

·       Step 3: The "two finger" rule: you should be able to slide two fingers under the harness at any point

·       Step 4: Check fit again after the first 3–4 walks — harnesses settle and may need re-adjustment

Common Indian breeds and typical harness sizes:

·       Small (XS–S): Pomeranian, Chihuahua, Dachshund, Toy Poodle, small Shih Tzu

·       Medium (M): Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Shih Tzu (standard), medium Indie

·       Large (L): Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, large Indie

·       XL: Saint Bernard, Great Dane, Rottweiler

Quick comparison summary

Use this to decide:

·       Back-clip harness: Use if your dog walks calmly, is a puppy, or is a small breed

·       No-pull (front-clip) harness: Use if your dog pulls, is a strong breed, or you walk on busy Indian streets

·       Dual-clip harness: Best overall — flexible for different situations and training stages

·       Collar only: Only for calm dogs — never use a collar as the sole control on a pulling dog

The bottom line

If your dog pulls, a no-pull front-clip harness is the most effective, kindest solution available. It works with physics rather than pain — redirecting your dog without any discomfort. Most dogs show noticeable improvement in pulling behaviour within 3–5 walks.
